Rewind

The date is Monday, January 28, 2008.

This is me...

3 days past due. Uncomfortable. Tired. Excited. Nervous.

That morning, Rob and I went to see our OBGYN, Dr. Sharp, and found out that we'd be induced first thing the next morning. We went home and enjoyed some quiet, alone time for the rest of the afternoon. That evening we stuffed our faces at the Chinese buffet. At that point, I knew the Doctor couldn't/wouldn't lecture me about gaining any weight or my sugar levels or anything. So, I wanted food. Sure, it wasn't a romantic, candle-lit dinner, but it was our last dinner out together before entering the world of parenthood.

Fastforward about 12 hours or so, and we're arriving at the Jersey County Hospital at 7:00 AM. Time for needles. Time for monitors. Time for contractions. Time for waiting....and waiting...and waiting. Tuesday, January 29, 2008 was a crazy day as far as the weather was concerned. When we got to the hospital that morning, it was cool, but not freezing cold. When Rob left to go get lunch mid-day, it was in the mid 70s. As I sat in the glider rocker by the window that afternoon while the Pitosin did its job, I could feel the temperature drop. By that evening, the temperature was back down into the 20s. I witnessed a beautiful, warm winter day from inside my hospital room. Finally, by that evening, my water had not broken but I was having regular contractions. At about 7:00 PM, they broke my water since it apparently wasn't going to happen on its own and we hoped it would help labor progress. About 8:00, I asked the Doctor if she thought the baby would arrive before midnight. I'll never forget the look on her face when I asked her that question. She gave me a sheepish shake of the head and an ever-so-delicate "No". My response was one word - "EPIDURAL". That is a decision I will never regret. Nor will I forget the older, burly male who was sent in to see my bare butt while I slumped over the side of the bed and leaned on Rob. Had said burly, older man not been bringing me the much-desired pain relief, I probably would have told him to take a hike. So, my water was broken, the epidural in, and the doctor had gone home. At that point, we had no clue what a long night we would be in for. Before the doctor left, she told the nurses to increase my Pitosin as often as possible to try to help me dialate more and keep my labor moving. What we hadn't planned on was the baby's heartrate dropping to a scary low every time the Pitosin was increased. I can still hear the sound of the alarm on the monitor every time her heartrate would plummet. The scariest feeling in the world is to know that your almost born baby is in danger. Luckily, decreasing the Pitosin and eventually stopping it altogether helped smooth out her heartrate after about 6 long hours. Rob and I tried to sleep sporadically during the times when everything was calm.

Early on the morning of Wednesday, January 30th, 2008, Dr. Sharp (of course she was well rested) came in to check on us. She was headed to her office, but reassured us that she would be called back soon. Soon? Like how soon? Like 30 minutes soon or 8 hours soon? Unfortunately it wasn't 30 minutes soon. It was more like 4 hours soon. About 8:00 labor really began to progress and of course I got sick. About 9:30 the doctor was called to come back. It seemed like it took her forever to get back to the hospital. Finally, at 10:52 AM, our beautiful Arabella Marie Kirbach entered the world. It was the most amazing moment in my life.

Thank you, God, for my baby girl.

2010 Goals

Since I've been thinking about all the things that have changed over the last year, I've started to look forward to what 2010 holds for the Kirbach family. Here are some of my goals/hopes/wishes for the New Year:

  • Pass the CPA exam before the end of 2010

  • Be supportive of Rob as he continues to work on and complete his Masters degree

  • Be less critical of other people

  • Clean house more often

  • Continue to save money for our dream house

  • Get out of debt (with the exception of our house and student loans) by July 1st

  • Work on a scrapbook for a minimum of 5 hours (or one scrap mania) per month

  • Plan a vacation for myself and Rob for the summer of 2011 to celebrate our 5 year anniversary

  • Get to my Weight Watchers goal weight by July 1st

  • Complain less :)

I'm sure there are TONS more that I'm not thinking of right now. I'll try to post updates as I add to the list! Its gonna be a busy year...I'd better get crackin'!

2009 Reflections

Every year, about this time, I get a little sentimental about all of the things that have happened during the last year. So, I figured I'd take a little time to reflect on these things...in no particular order:
  • Ella growing and changing DAILY

  • Hearing Ella say "Love You Momma"

  • Finishing my MBA

  • Rob finishing his degree at Greenville College

  • Rob's new job

  • Rob starting his Masters in Counseling at Missouri Baptist

  • The merger/acquisition/whatever-you-want-to-call-it at work

  • Rob's new bike

  • Surviving some babysitter changes for Ella (Theresa to Yolanda to Ashley and now Dana) - we have hopes that we'll be able to stay with Dana for a long time

  • Ella deciding that she didn't want to sleep in a crib anymore and moving up to her "big girl" bed, long before I was ready for her to make this change

  • Our 3rd wedding anniversary and a weekend trip to Evansville, Indiana

  • Grandpa & Grandma Klenke's 60th wedding anniversary

  • Mom & Dad's 35th wedding anniversary

  • Our new furnace & A/C units...I think our checkbook still has some residual grudges

  • Surprising Dad on Visitor's Day at Burn Camp

  • Trip to Chicago for the Bears game

  • Being able to spend 365 days enjoying God's creation and blessings

Baking with some amazing women

Last Wednesday, I had the pleasure of baking Christmas cookies with Ella, my Mom and my Grandma.

Ella rolling out some dough

Helping Mom measure out the flour

She's giving me "the look"...notice there is more flour on her than anywhere else

I guess she had an itch

Her magic clothes...just add a little water and they'll stand on their own!

Four generations...I'm so blessed!

She knew just who to ask to get a cookie

Some of the fruits of our labor

We made a total of 7 kinds of cookies. I believe Ella consumed a record-breaking amount of sugar that day. I hope its a tradition that we can continue for many, many years to come!

Weekend anticipation

I just had to take a minute to share how excited I am about this weekend...here's the breakdown...

Friday night - Rob is taking me to the Royal Dumpe Dinner Theatre. I've never been there, but I've heard its a lot of fun. Its been SO long since Rob and I had a date night. I can't wait!

Saturday morning -My graduation from SIUE! I have to be there at 8 AM and graduation is at 9. It still seems surreal that I'm actually done.

The rest of Saturday - Schudel Family Christmas. Every year, this time is filled with lots of fun and laughter. I'm sure this year will be no different! We are even blessed to have Rob's cousin Brandon and his wife join us from Guam! They definetly get the award for traveling the farthest. Ella will also get to see Santa that night. I'll be sure to post pictures later.

Sunday - Rob has basketball at SIUE in the afternoon, so I plan to hang out at my parents house and help prepare for my graduation party that afternoon/evening. In a previous post, I mentioned that I thought my Mom and Rob had something up their sleeves for that evening. Well, "the cat is out of the bag". I'm so excited to have an evening with all of the people that I love the most in one location to help celebrate.

I hope each of you has a great weekend ahead as well!!!
